Make it yourself, or buy it ready-made.
It is a little like Christmas when we get a new shipment of our Racing Laminate Sailcloth Seconds. Like Forest Gump, we never know what we're going to get. Our laminate sailcloth is consider seconds. That is, the fabric might have a wavy thread where it should be straight. Or, the fibers don't go to the edges. One piece even had a bug laminated between the layers! Whatever the problem, people who pay a lot for new racing sails expect perfect cloth. So, what isn't perfect for them is perfect for all types of very cool bags.
Laminate sailcloth is a high tech cloth used mostly on racing or performance sailboats. Aramid fibers (which have a high strength-to-weight ratio) such as Kevlar and Twaron, or carbon fiber and even polyester threads are laminated between 2 sheets of film (Mylar). Some have a taffeta (fabric) backing so it is less see-through. Some have film with a tint, usually gray, to lessen UV damage.
You can see the styles of fabric we currently have available by clicking here. If you'd rather buy finished bags we've made here in our shop, click here to go to the "Bags" page under Finished Products on our website.
Is it too early to start thinking about gifts? I can tell you that 99% of sailors, men and women alike, would love to receive a bag made from this high tech fabric. A wavy thread adds character to the bag, and I'll make sure you don't get any laminated bugs!
Until next time, happy sewing!
