My New Custom Screens

With cooler weather here, we can finally turn off the air conditioners and open up the boat. But along with fresh air and cool breezes we get mosquitoes, gnats, no-see-ums and flies.

I'm sure you have seen those screens advertised on TV that you can install on your patio door. The opening in the center has magnets along the edges. The magnets close up the screen after you've gone through. The screens come with adhesive backed Velcro and installation instruction.

The idea to use them on the boat came from Sylvia, my friend and marina manager. She asked me to modify one of those "as seen on TV" screens to fit one of the hatches on her boat. I liked the idea so much, I did two for myself. I got the screens at iGotTech.com, but I'm sure there are plenty of other sources out there.

I'll save the Velcro for another project and use the snaps that are already in place around our hatches. I used my Quick Fit Pins to hold the screen in place while I marked the edges of the door openings and the location of the snaps. Back at the shop, I cut the screen down to my marks. I sewed strips of black vinyl laminate around the perimeter to finish the edges and reinforce the snaps. On the boat, I squeezed in black enameled snaps with my Press-N-Snap, and we're in business!

They work well, and I am pleased with the result. Our cat likes the freedom to go in and out on his own.

Thanks for the feedback and encouragement on my bigger project I wrote about last week! What projects are you working on?

Until next time, happy sewing!
