Sunbrella vs. Other Marine Canvas Fabrics for Boats

Sunbrella vs. Other Marine Canvas Fabrics for Boats

Choosing the right fabric for a boat cover, bimini, dodger, enclosure, or canvas project can make a big difference in how the finished project performs over time. Marine fabric has to deal with sun, salt, rain, wind, mildew, movement, and regular wear -- so the "best" choice depends on how the fabric will be used.

One important clarification: Sunbrella is marine canvas. In fact, for many boat canvas projects, Sunbrella is one of the best all-around marine canvas options available. But it is not the only choice. Other fabrics, including Stamoid, SurLast, Weblon Regatta, Top Gun, and Sunforger Canvas, each have their own strengths and best-use situations.

Here is a practical comparison to help you choose the right fabric for your next boat project.

Sunbrella Marine Canvas

For most marine canvas projects, Sunbrella is our best all-around choice.

Sunbrella marine fabric is made from 100% acrylic, which gives it a great balance of durability, color selection, water resistance, breathability, and ease of use. It is available in 60+ colors and comes in two common widths: 46 inches and 60 inches.

One of Sunbrella's biggest advantages is that it breathes. That means it allows moisture to escape instead of trapping it underneath the cover. This is especially important on boats, where trapped moisture can lead to mildew, odors, and surface issues.

Sunbrella is also:

  • Water repellent
  • Made in the USA
  • Backed by a 10-year warranty
  • Approximately 9.25 oz. per square yard
  • Available in a wide range of marine-friendly colors

The main thing to know is that Sunbrella's water repellency does fade over time, especially after about five years or after heavy scrubbing, washing, or bleach use. When that happens, the fabric should be retreated with a Sunbrella-approved product such as 303 Fabric Guard, which we carry.

Best for: biminis, dodgers, boat covers, cockpit covers, sail covers, shade applications, and many general marine canvas projects.

Stamoid

Stamoid is a vinyl-coated polyester fabric. It is available in a few different weights, with Stamoid Top often considered the preferred weight for marine canvas work.

Unlike Sunbrella, Stamoid is waterproof. That can be useful in certain situations, but waterproof fabric also has a tradeoff: it does not breathe the same way acrylic canvas does. Because it can hold moisture in, covers made from Stamoid should be properly vented to help prevent mold and mildew.

Stamoid is often used by sailmakers for chafe patches on sails, and it is commonly seen on large new sport fishing boats. It weighs approximately 12.7 oz. per square yard and carries a 5-year warranty.

One downside is that it can feel more like a rubber sheet than traditional canvas. In some environments, especially near power plants or similar areas, the fabric can also appear to collect dirt or staining that may not clean off easily.

Best for: specialty marine applications, chafe patches, certain sport fishing boat covers, and projects where waterproofing is more important than breathability.

SurLast

SurLast is made by Glen Raven Mills, the same company that manufactures Sunbrella. It is a solution-dyed polyester with a urethane back coating.

At approximately 7 oz. per square yard, SurLast is lighter than Sunbrella, which makes it a good option for boat covers where Sunbrella may feel too heavy. It is waterproof and available in about 10 colors, with a 3-year warranty.

Because SurLast is waterproof, boat covers made with it should be vented to reduce trapped moisture and help prevent mildew.

Best for: lightweight boat covers and applications where a lighter waterproof fabric is preferred.

Top Gun

Top Gun is an acrylic-coated polyester fabric weighing approximately 11.7 oz. per square yard. It has a 5-year warranty and is known for being strong and water resistant.

That said, it has a stiffer, more plastic-like feel. We have discontinued it because it is not our preferred choice compared with other available marine canvas fabrics.

Best for: heavy-duty cover applications, though we generally recommend looking at other options first.

Weblon Regatta

Weblon Regatta is a vinyl-coated polyester fabric that has been used in marine canvas work for many years. It weighs approximately 13 oz. per square yard, is waterproof, and carries a 5-year warranty.

This fabric is especially well suited for lace-on tops, tops, dodgers, and enclosure trim. One of its classic uses is for boat tops where a white exterior reflects heat while a colored interior lining helps reduce glare.

Weblon Regatta is available in options such as white outside with blue, green, or gray inside, as well as solid white, ivory, or black.

Best for: lace-on tops, dodgers, enclosure trim, and applications where heat reflection and glare reduction matter.

Sunforger Canvas

Sunforger Canvas is a 100% cotton army duck fabric. Before synthetic marine fabrics became common, this was the traditional boat cover cloth.

It is treated for improved water repellency and mildew resistance and is still used today, especially on traditional wooden boats. It weighs approximately 10.1 oz. per square yard.

Sunforger has a more classic look and feel than synthetic fabrics, which makes it appealing for certain restoration projects or traditional boat applications.

Best for: traditional wooden boats, classic boat covers, and projects where a natural cotton canvas look is desired.

Which Marine Fabric Should You Choose?

For most boat owners and DIY marine canvas projects, Sunbrella is the best all-around choice. It offers the right combination of durability, breathability, color selection, warranty, and long-term performance.

Here is a simple way to think about it:

FabricBest Use
SunbrellaBest all-around marine canvas choice
StamoidWaterproof specialty applications and chafe patches
SurLastLightweight waterproof boat covers
Top GunHeavy-duty covers, though not our preferred option
Weblon RegattaLace-on tops, dodgers, and enclosure trim
Sunforger CanvasTraditional wooden boats and classic canvas projects

If breathability matters, Sunbrella is usually the better choice. If waterproofing is the top priority, fabrics like Stamoid, SurLast, or Weblon Regatta may be worth considering -- but remember that waterproof covers should generally be vented.

Final Recommendation

If you are not sure where to start, start with Sunbrella marine canvas. It is versatile, attractive, proven, and suitable for a wide range of boat canvas projects.

For specialty projects, another fabric may be a better fit. The right choice depends on whether you need breathability, waterproofing, lighter weight, traditional appearance, heat reflection, or chafe resistance.
